Unable to create directory uploads/2014/01. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

The above given is a very common error that you may encounter while using the WordPress platform for managing your sites.

The above error can be caused by two reasons and they are.

1. If you had changed your server.

In this case, the directory that you have used on the old server for uploading image changes when the account restores on the new server. There are directories 01 to 09 on the location wp-content/uploads/2014. If the mentioned directory is not available at this location, you need to manually create it and assign the ownership to “nobody” and give full permission to it.

2. If you had installed newly WordPress on your server.

In this case all the directories will be recreated. The issue here is caused by incorrect permission fixing by wp_mkdir_p to fail.  The line 1381 edit as.

1381:                if ( $dir_perms != $dir_perms & ~umask() ) {

Should be changed to

1381:                if ( $dir_perms != ( $dir_perms & ~umask() ) ) {

Give full permission to the directories wp-content, uploads and 2014.

Please remember that this issue is only found in a few versions of WordPress, it can be easily fixed by updating the version to its latest right from your dashboard.
