lowest numbered MX record points to localhost: rejected RCPT error

Posted on: August 18, 2015

You might encounter issues with exim mail server such as mail can’t be sent or received. If your exim mail log shows the error  lowest numbered MX record points to localhost: rejected RCPT error

While sedning the mails you see the error:

temporarily rejected RCPT <email@domainname.tld>: lowest numbered MX record points to local host

This is a most common error in cpanel server. The root cause of this error is that the domain “domainname.tld” is missing from the /etc/localdomains file of your server. There are two files on the server which defines whether the mails should be delivered either locally or remotely and they are:

1) /etc/localdomains

2) /etc/remotedomains

To resolve this issue.

Open the file /etc/localdomains

Now add the domain name from which you are sending mails.

Finally restart the exim mail server.

You should be able to send and receive mails normally.
